Priest: For our country, the president, and all in public service, let us pray to the Lord.
People: Kyrie eleison.

People: Kyrie eleison.

Priest: For favorable weather, abundance of the fruits of the earth, and temperate seasons, let us pray to the Lord.
People: Kyrie eleison.

Priest: For travelers by land, sea, and air, let us pray to the Lord.
People: Kyrie eleison.

Priest: For our deliverance from all affliction, wrath, danger, and distress, let us pray to the Lord.
People: Kyrie eleison.

Priest: Help us, save us, have mercy upon us, and protect us, O God, by Your grace.
People: Kyrie eleison.

If the first five petitions focused on the soul and the church, the next six remind us that we live in the world.

The sixth petition is offered on behalf of our secular leaders, people in authority. We believe that the church should pray for the good functioning of the state, and that the state should protect the church.

The seventh petition is offered on behalf of the local community and its faithful, as well as the world at large. We cannot help the world if we do not take care of our own people, but at the same time we cannot take good care of our people if we ignore the rest of the world.

The eighth petition reminds us how dependent we are on God. Our ancestors, being farmers, were well aware that if God did not grant a fruitful year, the harvest would not suffice for their subsistence. Even today, most people around the world are utterly dependent on the climate for survival.

The ninth petition is offered on behalf of all those who are vulnerable: travelers, captives, sick or suffering. Sometimes our bodies need salvation, just as our souls do.

The tenth petition expands the focus on all human suffering and recognizes that only God can deliver us from all of it.

The eleventh petition completes the cycle, invoking God’s protection through His grace. God’s grace is precisely the protective action of the Holy Spirit, the Giver of all gifts.
